Doing our bit to help save the planet

Many of you will remember Ev and Serena’s once-in-a-lifetime trip to Kenya last year to do their bit to help save the frontiers of the Maasai Mara Reserve, one of the natural wonders of the world.

They spent a week in the remote Enonkishu Conservancy on the northern boundary of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem planting 20,000 2 inch trees to protect the conservancy and help create what’s been termed the ‘Last Line of Defence’ for an area of land under growing threat.  

We do try to do our bit to help save the planet, although at least three trucks pull up at the pub every day delivering fresh ingredients, and we use power and heat, which contributes to global warming.

So we’re always on the look-out for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and make our business more sustainable.

We work hard to keep food miles to a minimum by buying local.  We have lovely salads and veg from Long Crendon’s Bucksum on our menu and great beers from the Vale Brewery that are brewed down the road in Brill on the pumps, for instance.  

We also put energy efficient equipment in our kitchens and are working hard to reduce our food waste.

Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time though, so when we were offered the chance to sign up for membership of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, we jumped at it!

This is the country’s only organisation dedicated to helping hospitality businesses become more sustainable and diners to make more sustainable choices when dining out.

As well as joining, our efforts to look after the planet and make our pub greener have been rewarded with a One Star Sustainability Champion rating, which is great news!
